A special kind of person dedicates her life to serving others. Susan Tomlinson Schmidt is that kind of person. She has spent more than 25 years of her career advancing the missions of a variety of service organizations, by focusing on building capacity through partnerships with universities and their local communities.
Currently, Schmidt is the president of the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, a network of colleges, universities and nonprofits that strengthens the leadership of the social sector with a talented and prepared workforce.
Schmidt joined Alliance in January 2013. During her first year, she has successfully introduced several key initiatives, including CNP Launch, an online job and internship matching system. As a result of her guidance in enhancing member services and building strategic partnerships, the Alliance is on target to reach its goal to credential 1,000 students annually by 2016.
Previously, Schmidt was executive director of the Institute for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership at the University of Memphis. The Institute is a research center focused on the study of the regional nonprofit sector. While there, she also directed the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance program on campus.
She received her master’s in public administration from the University of Memphis and is a Certified Nonprofit Professional.
Schmidt and her husband David, a professional chef, have two sons, Patrick and Walker.
