While passing the baton is a natural—albeit stressful—part of any organization, nonprofit treasurer transitions are unique because errors can create compliance risks and lead to the loss of funds. Unlike corporate finance teams, most nonprofits rely on a single volunteer treasurer who holds institutional knowledge about everything from recurring vendor payments to the quirks of your accounting software. To maintain supporters’ trust and operational stability, your board must secure your assets and ensure your financial trajectory remains steady during a leadership shift. In this guide, we’ll walk through the four critical steps to protect ...

Sometimes all a fundraising campaign needs is good-natured competition to energize your community. That’s where pledge fundraisers come in. In these peer-to-peer campaigns, participants ask friends, family, and neighbors to pledge a donation tied to the completion of certain actions, such as running a certain distance in a charity run. Because many donors are participating in the fundraiser together, positive peer pressure encourages everyone to finish their goal, if not go above and beyond! Pledge fundraisers are a popular choice for many organizations, but they’re most popular among schools, nonprofits, sports teams, and community clubs due to their low ...

When prioritizing your projects and planning your budget for the year, web accessibility must be one of your top priorities and an area where you direct overhead funding . Courts have ruled that nonprofit websites must comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) , as they are increasingly considered public accommodations. But beyond legal requirements, making your website accessible to all audiences lets you open your mission to anyone who wants to be part of your cause, increasing the number of donors, volunteers, and advocates who help you achieve your goals. Web accessibility offers the ultimate form of inclusivity, telling all supporters, ...

Written by Priya Balachandran, CNP, Events Co-Chair, Association of CNPs Executive Committee and Senior Researcher and Development Analyst, Northern Illinois Food Bank “If it’s not handled ethically, it didn’t count.” That line lingered after a recent Association of CNP webinar, Ethics From All Sides , where Kristy Ryan, MPA, ACNP, SHRM-SCP (Chief Operating Officer at Move For Hunger), Jeanette Gass, CAE, CAP, ACNP (Senior Program Manager at ICMA – International City/County Management Association), and I explored how quiet daily decisions shape everything from boardrooms to data files. A conversation that sparked far more ...

I'd like to think I've improved my conflict management skills over the years, but I still have plenty of room for growth! This week I read Vu Le's post titled, The way we manage conflicts needs to take neurodiversity into consideration. I really appreciated the points he made and I can't get the post out of my head. Here are a few of the items sticking with me: With conflicts, though, most of us are still relying on tools and strategies that may not have been updated to include neurodiversity. This means that while we may be thoughtful about neurodivergent colleagues when everything is going well, we throw this consideration out the window when there’s ...

I'd like to think I've improved my conflict management skills over the years, but I still have plenty of room for growth! I read this blog post this week from Vu Le about conflict management and taking into consideration neurodiversity. Here are some of the key points from the post that stuck with me: "Unfortunately, the conflict-resolution tools and techniques we’ve been relying on don’t always work, or are actually making things worse, because these tools and techniques were designed with neurotypical people in mind, with the grounding assumptions that everyone involved in the conflict will have the same thought patterns, the same way of absorbing, ...

Think back to when you first got your start in the social good sector. You may have had experience as a donor or a volunteer before, but you had a lot to learn when you became a nonprofit professional. You had to become acquainted with fundraising strategies, marketing initiatives, strategic plans, and all of the behind-the-scenes aspects of how organizations run. As much as you felt you had to learn at the beginning of your nonprofit career, you still have a lot to learn. All nonprofit professionals do! We should never stop learning in our professional lives. One of the most effective and efficient ways to continue intentionally learning ...
